Kenya Wins!!

As I opened the 'Daily Nation on line' on Monday the 4th March 2013, my heart swelled with pride as the long lines like snakes sedately, smoothly made their way to the ballot boxes. As the live text read, 'Today Kenya Decides', my heart jumped to my throat and I choked. My eyes uncontrolled welled, tears of joy threatening to run amok any time.

I laughed joyfully as the huge crowds conversed patiently while waiting to make their voices heard. As the presidential candidates diligently cast their votes and appealed for peace.

Democracy comes with a price to those willing to pay; the perfect day was momentarily shattered as enemies of democracy and peace, agents of chaos and havoc shamelessly begged for attention from a nation and a world uninterested.

Kenya’s democracy has matured, and the germination of the seed sowed in the promulgation of the beautiful flower of a constitution is now beholden.

The suspense and anxiety that came with the process as all the eyes turned to the live screens delivering the vote count was all worth the while. Kenyans braved on, as hours turned to days and the votes flexed into the millions, keeping the promise of peace. Indeed peace prevailed.

The hour of reckon, finally, dawned on Kenyans and the world that waited, as the chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC),Sir Isaac Hassan, after months of hard work, patriotically and dutifully took the podium to shine gallantly with praise well deserved vibrating throughout the world.

On this day that Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta was declared officially the winner and the president elect of the republic of Kenya, though not elected by the hundred percent of the Kenyan population, Kenya as a nation won. On his maiden speech of acceptance, he promised to serve all Kenyans and to work with all Kenyans.

It is now the beginning of a new chapter in Kenya’s history. As we mark the fifty year old independence, the country must now embark on a conscious transformation that will reflect the new young face of a united nation of 42 tribes.

In this aspect and ironically so, the young Kenyatta must now take on and correct the sins of his father, the senior Kenyatta by denouncing and discouraging tribalism, nepotism and marginalisation of the minority tribes. His must rebuild the broken up nation of Kenya to one nation that can foster faith and trust in every part of the country.

His biggest challenges will be in the fight against insecurity, corruption and impunity as front line vices that blossomed in the past regimes. This is where Kenyans will weigh his legacy on.

Kenyans all over the world as we celebrate this historic moment, we should not forget where we come from. We should not forget those who took us here. Those men and women who have sacrificed their lives, resources and time for our great nation and state. In this category, we should thus give due respect to the outgoing Honourable Prime Minister Raila Odinga for his part. He was a worthy opponent to Uhuru Kenyatta all the way in the just concluded elections.

With Uhuru in charge, we expect that the foundation of reforms and development laid by the Honourable President Mwai Kibaki will continue in the course of the actualisation of dream 2030. That he will duteously uphold, implement and promote the constitution of the republic as his guide book in carrying out his services to Kenyans and Kenya.

May every Kenyan regardless of the outcome of these elections celebrate this day. Most importantly, we have a new, young, vibrant and willing government in place to undertake the tusk of our nation building. Let us trust that the Uhuru administration will fulfil its promises and deliver as stressed in its manifesto. Kenya faithfully entrusts this new government with its well being and future, it must return!!

Congratulations to all Kenyans my brothers and sisters where ever you are. Congratulations to the president elect Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta and his deputy William Samoei Ruto!

May total freedom come to the sovereign state of Kenya through Uhuru! God bless Kenya!

Njoro.
